Harira for New Moms

A nourishing Ayurvedic tonic for postpartum healing & winter wellness



🧾 Ingredients:

Lotus seeds (makhana) - 1 cup (chopped)
Coconut (nariyal) - 1/2 cup (grated)
Cashew nuts (kaju) - 20 (chopped)
Almonds (badam) - 30 (chopped)
Raisins (kishmish) - 20 (chopped)
Walnuts (akhrot) - 10 (chopped)
Gond (Edible gum) - 1/2 cup
Pista - 10
Dry dates (chhuhara) - 10
Poppy seeds - 4 tbsp
Charoli (chironji) - 1 tsp
Jaggery (gud) - 1 cup
Desi Ghee - 4 tbsp
Cumin seeds (jeera) - 1 tsp
Carom seeds (ajwain) - 1 tsp
Ginger powder (sonth powder) - 2 tbsp
Turmeric powder (haldi powder) - 2 tsp
Fennel seeds (saunf) - 1 tbsp
Green cardamoms (hari elaichi) - 4
Cloves (laung) - 2
Nutmeg (Jaifal) - 1/8 piece
Cinnamon (dalchini) - 1/2 inch piece

Method:

🥣 Step 1: Soaking Ingredients

  1. 💧 Soak dry dates and poppy seeds (khus khus) separately in water for 2 hours.


🧄 Step 2: Make the Base Paste

  1. 🌰 Remove seeds from dry dates and add to a blender.

  2. 🌿 Drain poppy seeds and add to the blender.

  3. 🔄 Grind both into a smooth paste.


🥄 Step 3: Roast Dry Fruits in Ghee

  1. 🍯 Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a pan.

  2. 🌰 Add almond pieces and roast until golden brown.

  3. 🥜 Add cashews and walnuts; roast until fragrant.

  4. 🌟 Add gond (edible gum) in batches; roast until it puffs up and turns crispy.

  5. 🍽️ Transfer to a plate to cool.


⚙️ Step 4: Grind Roasted Ingredients

  1. 🌀 Once cool, blend the roasted dry fruits and gond to a coarse powder.


🍥 Step 5: Roast Makhana (Lotus Seeds)

  1. 🍯 In the same pan, heat 1 tbsp ghee.

  2. 🌼 Add makhana and roast until crispy. Set aside.


🌿 Step 6: Prepare Spice Masala

  1. 🧂 In a small blender jar, add:

  • Cumin seeds, carom seeds, fennel seeds

  • Green cardamoms, cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon

  • Turmeric powder, dry ginger powder

  1. ⚡ Grind into a fine powder, then add a little water to make a smooth paste.


🍲 Step 7: Cook the Masala

  1. 🔥 In a kadahi, heat 2 tbsp ghee and add the masala paste.

  2. 💦 Add ½ cup water into the blender jar (to get remaining masala) and pour it into the kadahi.

  3. 🍛 Roast the masala until the ghee separates and aroma rises.


🍯 Step 8: Add Date-Poppy Seed Paste

  1. 🌰 Add the date and poppy seed paste to the roasted masala.

  2. 🔥 Cook until it becomes aromatic and the color deepens.


🥄 Step 9: Make Jaggery Syrup

  1. 🍯 In another pan, mix 1 cup jaggery with 1 cup water.

  2. 🫗 Heat until jaggery is completely dissolved.


🍵 Step 10: Combine All Elements

  1. 🫕 Add the jaggery syrup to the masala mixture.

  2. 🌀 Mix and bring it to a gentle boil.

  3. 🥥 Add:

  • Roasted almonds, cashews, walnuts

  • Charoli, raisins, pistachios, shredded coconut

  • Coarsely ground gond

  1. 🔥 Cook everything on a medium flame.


🌰 Step 11: Final Touch

  1. 🍯 Continue cooking until the syrup is thick and cooked through.

  2. 🌸 Add roasted makhana at the end to keep them crunchy.


✅ Step 12: Serve & Store

  1. 🔥 Cook for another minute, then turn off the flame.

  2. 🍽️ Serve hot to new mothers — or enjoy with the whole family during winter for strength and warmth.

  3. ❄️ Store in the fridge for up to 1 week. Reheat as needed.
